TIPS ON HOW TO DES -TRESS AT WORK

January 24, 2017

We all suffer from overload at times in our jobs, which can make us feel overwhelmed and unhappy.   Here are some tips on how to distress your day and make work more calm and enjoyable.

  1. IMPROVE YOUR ENVIRONMENT!

Put up photos of your favourite people, a piece of art that you love, or a card that makes you laugh.  Add a plant or a bunch of flowers to your office.  Every 15 minutes take a break from your computer and look at these items.

  1. ORGANIZE YOUR DESK!

Make sure your desk isn’t cluttered with anything that you don’t need.  File everything away, throw out pens that don’t work.  Take 5-10 minutes at the end of every day to organize your space.

  1. MAKE FRIENDS WITH CO-WORKERS!

You don’t have to become best friends, but take the time to get to know your co-workers.  Being friendly and smiling more will help you make friends and help your body naturally feel more calm.

  1. MANAGE YOUR WORKLOAD!
Make sure you aren’t overwhelmed by all you have to do. Delegate; ask for more help;  cut back on some of your work.  Create a daily schedule that ensures you get everything done by the time you leave.

  1. MOVE AROUND!

Get up out of your seat at least once per hour.  Take a short 10-minute walk once during your work day.  Take the stairs instead of the lift.  Any simple movement will make you feel more calm and less overwhelmed.

  1. TIME IT RIGHT!

Nothing is more stressful than running late!  Give yourself an extra 15 minutes to ensure that you are ahead of schedule and this will also give you some extra time to prepare if necessary.

  1. SCHEDULE TEN MINUTES OF WORRY TIME!
Write down on a piece of paper under 3 headings

My worry    /  Why it worries me   /   What is the worst that can happen

When you confront your worst case scenario and realize that it probably won’t happen, you can get back to work with your worry load lightened.

  1. BREATHE DEEPLY!

Breathing exercises help you to relax and make your body feel like it does when it is relaxed.  So take those three deep breathes in and out, and feel your body calm down.

  1. STAND ON ONE LEG!
Yes, silly as it sounds, stand on one leg for 30 seconds and then swop to the other leg. Your inner alarm will realize that you are choosing to slow down and will turn down the reactive flow of adrenalin that makes you stressed.

  1. FINISH THE TOUGH STUFF FIRST!
Get the most complicated or difficult tasks out of the way so that they aren’t looming over you. Soon you will start looking forward to your afternoons.

Improve your productivity, enjoy your work more, stay calm and HAVE A HAPPY DAY!
